A heartfelt day of community, courage and cycling around Boksburg
On the morning of 23 August 2026, the roads around Boksburg carried more than the sound of spinning wheels and steady breathing. They carried hope, kindness and the shared determination of a community coming together for a very special little boy: baby Sebastian, who was born premature and whose journey had already touched many hearts.
Nexus Cycling Club joined forces with Sunward residents and fellow cyclists for a fundraising ride that reminded everyone why cycling is about so much more than kilometres, pace and performance. It is about people. It is about showing up. It is about using the strength of many to support one family when they need it most.
The route was a 100 km loop around Boksburg, giving riders the chance to explore new roads, discover fresh scenery and experience familiar places from a different perspective. For many Nexus members, it was also an opportunity to ride beyond the usual training routes and meet new cycling friends along the way.
Most of the Nexus riders took part in the First Division, where the group held a steady and spirited pace of more than 32 km/h. The riding was strong, disciplined and energetic, but the true highlight of the day was not found only in the speed of the bunch. It was found in the smiles at the start, the conversations on the road, the teamwork through every turn and the knowledge that every pedal stroke helped contribute to a worthy cause.
The event created a beautiful bridge between club members, Sunward residents and the broader cycling community. It brought people together socially, encouraged new friendships and strengthened the sense of connection that makes community events so meaningful. Riders who may have started the morning as strangers finished the loop as part of the same story: a story of generosity, compassion and shared purpose.
For Nexus Cycling Club, the day was a proud reminder that the club’s strength is not measured only in fitness, speed or race results. It is measured in the willingness of its members to ride for something bigger than themselves. By supporting baby Sebastian and his family, the club and the Sunward community showed what can happen when hearts, wheels and good intentions move in the same direction.
What began as a Sunday morning ride became a moving celebration of hope. Around Boksburg, over 100 kilometres, every rider helped carry a message of support for a premature baby boy whose fight inspired a community to come together. Baby Sebastian’s story gave the ride its purpose, and the people who arrived to support him gave the day its heart.
